Sounds like my plot lol! I have spent MONTHS digging brambles and couch grass, plus I am overrun with bindweed. Good times But once you get into the zone, it comes up quicker than you think it will...keep weeding/hoeing and it will *eventually* die and leave you mostly alone.
    Good luck!

It looks like you've got your work cut out for you there. I though I was busy and I just have to weed a polytunnel and a greenhouse.

I have decided to spray the whole area so bought a sprayer and will get some Glyphosate as advised by Two Sheds. just too big an area to go organic route got lots of bramble to knock back too. I'm at the allotment tomorrow will get some updated pics tomorrow.

Excellent. I wish I wasn't so stubborn and doing the same, but I'm double digging my way to victory (slowly)

do yourself a favour and cover the lot with cardboard and 4 inches of manure

Looks like a fairly flat plot so mass amounts of manure could be an option. Not for mine though - its up a fairly steep track and my suspension is low enough without 250kg of poo

Can't believe T-S advised you to use weedkiller ............

and before you go shovelling poop make sure it's not tainted with weedkiller else nothing will grow anyway ..........

Weedkiller is not my first choice but time constraints make it more practicable I will only be using it in areas that I don't plan to use this year I've already made a start on this years growing area ( No weedkiller ) but the other area has to be sprayed. it's only going to be a one off. The area is deceiving in the pictures although it looks flat it is pitted with dips and has already lead to twisted ankles and knees and it slopes at one end where water collects in very heavy clay soil.

I have some time yet before my final decision on weedkiller which ever way I go I will be taking on any advice that you good people can give.

I don't understand why time constraints mean you have to use weedkiller when you're not going to use the area this year? Don't you have the time to cover it instead?

I'm guessing we aren't weed killer fans on here then?

I'm not! I've no wish to poison my soil, or anything that lives in it, or anyone who eats anything grown in it. To me its a bit like this meat scandal - you're supposed to trust the producer - well I don't!

Weedkiller can leach into the other areas. Cover the area and then you know not to walk on and twist ankles on the bit covered in cardboard......weedkiller won't even out the ground for you. You can cut holes and plant squashes through or potatoes or beans and the cardboard means you won't have to be weeding in between them. It is not too big an area to go organic route as you put it . I've been on my lottie for two years , it was like a field like yours is , and have it pretty much all in use now.
