Hi, I have a large plot with several water butts on it. I'm struggling to water everything in this heat and have seen others using a pump and hose. I've looked on eBay for waterbutt pumps but they all use electric (which I don't have at the lotty) can anyone advise me how to get round this??? Any advice much appreciated ☀

My advice is stop watering EVERYTHING. It really doesn't need it.

One of our plot holders uses a hose and pump attached a car battery for power. All looks a bit Heath Robinson to me but seems to work. He is pumping from the cattle troughs we have on site. I have to say it annoys me slightly as we share the water cost between the plots and logic suggests he must be using more. Not your problem anyway.Comment

Yes I quite agree with rustlady as two yrs ago I watered everything setting up a timed watering device etc. my water bill was horrendous not helped by having a hidden leek in the pipe under the lawn which took a lot of digging and swearing to find. However, I digress. A neighbour and good friend who is a retired farmer lectured me on watering and his advice is generally only water to establish crops. He says generally dryness will only delay the crop not kill it. And looking at his "pottager" I do believe he is right. I have only watered my runner beans, newly sown radish, lettuce and soaked some strips being improved and prepared for new sowings.Comment

Ok, thanks for all your help. I thought maybe I'd killed my carrots by not watering them but now I'm told they may have got fly? I'm new to this so I'm not sure!Comment

I use a solar pump for the poly, but only that and stuff in pots gets watered.
Mind you, you are in Suffolk.

If you have a slope on your plot then site your butts at the high point and use gravity to water when needed.. also very early morning or at dusk are. the best time.Comment

Morning everyone. A little bit of not veg advice sought from you knowledgable people. To introduce a bit of variety and colour I would like to grow a climbing or rambling rose (what is the difference?) up between two silver birches which are Siamese twins at their bases. I can easily construct a lattice support between the trunks up to about 2 metres. I would prefer a red rose and multiple flowering.Comment
