I feel your pain with the plastic and the bindweed roots! I have the same, but with three layers of carpet. I think at least, that I've managed to dig most of it out. It's amazing how they weave themselves under anything that's laid over the ground.
    Great progress!

    Hi SarrissUK

Just been reading your blog and see you have a good project on the go with similar problems to those I have, plenty of bindweed and carpet. Just discovered carpet myself yet another thing to cope with, the local Council have written to all of their plot holders telling them that using carpets on plots is now banned and there is a limit of only 4 car tyres per plot. Thankfully I don't have the tyres, been down today putting the posts for the fence between myself and my neighbor, tomorrow I'm back to finish the job and get on with more digging on plot 3 to get it ready for the planting I have planned for this year.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is when I reach the tree stumps that I had bonfires over them after I had cut them down, I know it will be hard work to dig out the stumps especially one of them that was the largest.

It sounds like you're doing really well MB! I've nearly managed to get rid of all the carpets now, and it's been hard work, but it's not taken as long as I thought it might. Well worth it too, the soil underneath is lovely.

Now I'm eyeing up the plot next door LOL

    Update on Plot 1:

Did the first job and put in proper posts for the fence between myself and my new neighbour and used postcrete to make them rigid and did a proper finished job, pictures supplied notice the Asparagus bed in front of the fence needs weeding and top dressing prior to it waking up when spring finally arrives.

Forked out all the Twitch/Couch grass growing down a band on the left side of the main growing area. Used farmyard manure delivered last year and in a pile on Plot 2 and now well rotted to cover the bulk of Plot 1 and between the Asparagus and the winter Peas and dug it in with a spade. Removed any roots for Bindweed, Dandelion, Twitch/Couch grass and the dreaded Horsetail (aka Mares tail) which is only minor and diminishing.

Pictures follow (I know you all like them):

Next update for plot 2 and Plot 3.

    Ok further progress:

Plot 1 is finished, two small beds on the right dug over and weeded, Asparagus bed consisting of 2 rows weeded and top dressed, remainder of the main plot had manure added and was dug in and weeded. Only thing needs doing now is for the fence to be painted with some of the 3 full unused tins of Fencelife I inherited when I took on Plot 3. (photos showing the progress)

Plot 3: the front of the plot has been dug and all the Couch/Twitch grass I could get out was removed together with Bindweed roots and the remaining roots from the old fruit bushes I removed at the end of last year, last photo posted is halfway through the digging. This will be covered with black plastic tomorrow to stop anything nasty hoping to poke its head up and grow.

Plot 1: Final task to paint the fence a nice shade of green on both sides so my new neighbors aren't feeling left out..... jd

Plot 3: Covered the front and other side of bed containing onions, shallots and garlic with old and new thick plastic to suppress anything wanting to grow I haven't planted. Emptied the compost bin further down so I can relocate it later and so I can progress further down with the digging.

Pictures for you to see the progress:
