  • 3' or 4' wide beds.

I'm in a bit of a quandary. In the same area, I can either have 12 13'x3' raised beds or 10 13'x4' raised beds. I'm tempted to go for the 4' width but what do you think or more importantly what would you do assuming you would have raised beds in the first place. Advice as always gratefully received.

I would make sure there was enough room between the beds, to enable you to kneel comfortably, to tend the beds when you need to. My raised beds are 2 sleepers long, by half a sleeper wide, so just over 4' wide, I guess. I wouldn't want them any wider, but I am a short-arris!

The 4' option gives you more growing space too!

Cheers G4, both options have 2' paths all round them.

My beds are 4ft wide because that gave me more growing area, they're not raised though but by the rate I'm making compost they soon will need boarding.

I have 4' x 10' beds on my allotment and find them great for getting inbetween when weeding, as can reach easily without treading on the soil. And as Glutton4.. said more growing space cant be bad ;0)

Thats what's confusing me. Is it more growing space if I am losing 2 beds?

As long as you have enough reach (which those gorilla arns should have!) to reach to the centre of a 4 foot bed I would stick with those. 3 foot beds would make it easier but the path to bed ratio would be greater giving you less growing area.

Decision made!.....4' beds give me 520 sq ft growing area..........3' beds give me 468 sq ft growing area....I knew I could rely on you to help me out.

Now maths isn't my strong point, BM, but I can use a calculator! I'm not sure that 2' is enough width for paths, though. Others may disagree.

I have seen plots that don't take the paths right to the boundary fence (think teeth in a comb with the fence being the spine and the beds being the teeth). If you stop the path 2' before the fence, you gain 2sq ft. This could compensate for lost growing space if you go for the 3' bed option. It does mean that you have to walk back to the centre path to get around to the other side of the bed though.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.
