Top Tips for Improving Your Soil

By Sian Bunney
21st December 2016

Worms Direct help you ensure the success of your edibles by providing top tips for optimising the quality of your plot.

Anyone who has had a garden, allotment or grown crops in tubs knows only too well the importance of soil improvement and maintenance. Good horticultural magazines and books will explain the benefits of adding a variety of materials to the earth to aid its condition. This is wise advice, but there is one aspect that is less frequently discussed, despite being one of the most important in helping your edibles reach their full potential. Balancing the micro-life in your earth is essential to the well-being of your precious plants, but adding organic matter is not the only way of dramatically increasing the number of micro-organisms – using worms also does this.

Worms are an excellent addition to your soil – they feed on and digest organic matter, and as it passes through their guts the material is enriched with a myriad of beneficial bacteria. This is then excreted as worm casts. As the creatures then continue to travel through the earth, they mix it up by creating burrows, allowing air and water to permeate the soil. Importantly, they leave behind a trail of mucous and worm casts containing the magical mix of helpful bacteria, fungi and micro-organisms that are so essential for the well-being of your edibles. Nature is very clever!

Worms Direct are specialist worm suppliers, providing specific types for fishing bait, composting bins, wormeries and organic waste recycling, along with worms for garden and soil improvement. View their products at wormsdirectuk.co.uk
