  • Peacock Butterflies

I had a pile of pallets/wood from pallets next to my shed, for fencing on my allotment. Yesterday, I got stuck into the fencing, used a lot of them, and due to some logistical issues (with the fence in place I had to move a water-butt and 'fire wood' store to where the wood pile had been for access), I was forced to move the large pallet that everything had been resting on, 'in' this pallet (which had been covered by wood and groundsheet) there were a lot (about 20 in all I'd guess) of peacock butterflies - a few dead, but most alive, but only just - tattered wings etc. I know some butterflies will find somewhere like a shed or woodpile to hibernate over winter, but this is early August, so far too early for this, and they weren't in any condition for it anyway. Are they just 'programmed' to hide away after breeding, that's the only explanation I can think of as to why there would be so many of one species?

The only other thing I found (disappointingly) were a lot of very big brown slugs (some over 4 inches long) - I'm afraid my wildlife tendencies don't extend to them though!!!
