    This was tucked up in some native hedging that runs between our house and some scrub.



    I think I am going to have to invest in a new insect guide!!

    the closest likeness in my Collins pocket guide is xanthorhoe fluctuata - the garden carpet moth. Called that apparently because the patterns look like traditional carpet patterns not because it's going to eat the carpets!

      I don't know what it is but the markings look like a bird - a swallow perhaps with a forked tail

        Thanks Mothawk - it is similar but this one had more solid colour, less of the speckling! I tried the gurgle image search thingy, and the best match was a finch!!!
