Only when they arrive am I reminded just how depleted their numbers are compared with even a few years ago, so I am delighted to report the first one arrived nearly two weeks ago and a second came mid week. Last year there were three. I am holding my breath. AND I honestly do know how to spell it!

    We still only have one.

I hope a partner appears soon.

She has a more bubbly sort of call. I think I'm hearing two males.

Yeah female Cuckoos sound different to males. The male is the one that sings "cuckoo".

I was up on Alnwick Moor yesterday in the hope of hearing my first of the year but no joy yet I had my first on May 4th last year so it should be in the next week or so. Did see quite a few Red Grouse chasing each other, Linnets, Meadow Pipits, Chiffchaff & Willow Warbler, Buzzard and a stunning male Roe Deer walk right past the car I was parked in the entrance to a gate (to the grouse moor, not somebody's garden ) and he just stepped out of the wood nearby and passed by me at a distance of around 30ft! I was SO excited and trying not to breathe and alert him to me at the same time

One of my regrets in moving to the Torquay area is that there are no cuckoo's, maybe inland a bit, I think the sea gulls put them off.

No just me being stupid! "Cwcw" in Welsh - the first w is an u sound and the second oo - so basically sounds the same in both languages. Any "offended" mod is welcome to change the title.

Actualy the Welsh Cukoo has a different sound to the English Cukoo It goes something like this " Cukoo is it"
