  • Can you recommend a seed supplier

A colleague at work has a large grass verge which he wants to dig and plant with a wildflower/grass mix. The area is around 3 foot by 300 foot long, or roughly 100 m2

He's asked me where he could buy a large enough amount of seed mix for this, at the best price. Can anyone recommend a supplier or website address (I've previously bought my wildflower mix from Garden Organic, but it'd work out too expensive from them)

I've previous bought lawn grass seed from Boston, they sell Wildflower mixes, but I have no idea if the price is any good. Their lawn seed was good.

Annual or perennial flowers WPG ? If annual I would be asking my local council if I could by some from them as they sow large beds on the roundabouts in my area

I would agree that you should ask the landscape officer at your local council, as they will know of sources where you can get a large amount of seed mixture. Most of the retail sale mixes come in tiny quantities and with fairly poor ranges of wildflowers, many of which will not establish. I enquired here at a local chateau which has a really impressive wildflower meadow how it was done, and they told me the whole areas is weed killed and then ploughed and raked in the late summer and the wild flower mixture sown in early autumn. That way the plants are established well before winter and get a good start in the spring. But they DO have to repeat the process annually to maintain the display, otherwise grass and the common weeds take over.

If this approach is not practical with a grass verge, then the best way to establish wild flowers would be to plant them through the grass as plug plants having grown them on under cover in module trays to reasonable size. Just bunging wild flower seed on to an existing verge would be a total waste of money as most of the seed would be lost.

Naturescape sells by the kilo, both grass/wildflower mixes and pure wildflower mixes BertieFox. They also do a budget range. My dad seeded his field with their economy mix and it did really well until his land drain failed and it got too wet.
