  • Blackbirds 2nd brood.

They are onto the 2nd brood now. Unusually, they are using the same nest. They usually build a new one. The blue tits are almost ready for fledging. Wonder if they go for a second brood too?

They did four last year, but built different nests every time.

I think 'my' female Blackbird is onto her second brood now too

I had her as a companion whilst I was digging a bed over on Friday 8th May....Good teamwork - I dug, she removed worms and grubs away to her youngster which was hiding in the corner of the plot

She then disappeared the week I was off work and spent the whole time digging the rest of the beds (10th - 17th May) and I didn't know if she was brooding another clutch or had been taken by our resident Sparrowhawk. I hoped it wasn't the latter because even though I know it's all part of Nature's cycle I'd grown quite fond of her friendly (or bold!) nature.

Then on Tuesday 26th I arrived back at my plot and was opening doors and vents and then watering plants in the polytunnel and in she flew! She landed on a bed about 10ft away with a beakful of worms, ''chuck-chucked' at me, I said ''Oh, hello sweetheart'' She then popped back out to wherever her nest is. SO pleased to see she's still around.
