Thanks guys the name explains alot as there is always a plague of sparrows round here this time of year and they seem to like my garden as my cat scarer keeps the plague of cats away.Last edited by simon12; 03-04-2014, 02:59 PM.Comment

We saw a Sparrowhawk eating a Blackbird in the strawberry patch the other week all what was let was the beak and feathers.Location....East Midlands.Comment

Its Mothhawk, don't worry she's just thinking and she has to close her eyes to do that, she's done a lovely job of painting her eyelids to make it look like she's still away though.

I've seen them twice in my garden. The second time I happened to be looking out the kitchen window at the exact moment a sparrowhawk swooped down, snatched a greenfinch off of the seed feeder I have next to the window, then land on the patio literally 2m beyond the window, and eat the hapless finch. It was a sunny day, and I think perhaps the glare on the window prevented the hawk seeing me

Yes, it's a sparrowhawk. A male one.
I get one here at times and a goshawk! Definitely not welcome in my garden...Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.
Everything is worthy of kindness.

We have a resident sparrowhawk that visits the gardens in my area
put any seed feeders close to a fence or difficult position so the little birds can feed in peace
Bird tables in open ground can be a restaurant for sparrow hawks too

We get a Sparrowhawk quite often in the garden, we feed the birds a lot so have plenty of Sparrows around, I've counted over 30 at a time before . . . the female Sparrowhawks are bigger than the males and will take Pigeons.Comment

Simon what exactly is your cat scarer? If it works I need one. I planted yesterday some carrots seeds under a pvc tunnel only to come out this morning to find halfway up it disturbed earth and scattered seeds and a present left by a cat. There should be a law against this sort of trespassing.Comment
