Default Sunflowers and Finches

Last year, I was surprised to find that 3 sunflowers were growing strongly, the result of a bit of bird seed spillage.

I let them get on with it, only watering them now and then and was pleased to watch them progress into dazzling plants of around 6-7ft. However, the best part was when I discovered that the finches were feeding from them.

I love feeding the birds, but unfortunately my wallet doesn't.

So this year I'm definitely planning on having a regiment of sunflowers dotted about in addition to the bird feeders. It seems a pretty good return to me - attractive and striking plants, and free bird food (seeds are from a seed swop).

Last year I also noticed that the goldfinches were clinging onto Mum's verbena bonariensis flower heads, feasting on the seeds. So in that autumn I scattered loads of v.bonariensis seeds down, crossing my fingers that they'll come up this year and prove to be another free feast for the birds.

Anybody else got any good 'freebie' bird food tips?

Another plant loved by Goldfinches is the Teasel, Bees also adore its flowers so it's another win win!!
