  • What are these?

Tried to identify these 2 plants, which are abundant and persistent on my plot. Any ideas welcome!

First one has a black woody underground horizontal root/rhizome from which multiple shoots spring along length, and second has a single long white-ish tap root from which the leaves all emerge directly at top.
    Thanks

    Hi & welcome!
You'll have some better guesses tomorrow when more of us are awake, but my best guesses are horseradish and comfrey.
Does the root of the first one smell much?

Hello and welcome to the Vine. Agree with you VC, horseradish and comfrey. Two useful plants but rather invasive.
