Don't know what it's called but I had it on my old plot. It has really prickly leaves and a long tap root. Make sure you get the whole root out when you dig it out or it will regrow. Having said that I did used to compost it and never had any problems with it persisting in the compost. Wear gloves! -

its in a bit of a wild patch with nettles that i let grow in the garden so am not gonna dig up, but am not going to let it seed.

It's a Thistle. Don't know which one, but you wanna get it out before it sets seed.
Some plants, like Dandelions, for example, can still set seed from flower after they've been dug up, so best to burn or compost it, just in case.
