Default Rats

One side of our allotment boundary is all hedging before it backs on to the main road and my plot runs right up to this hedge. I was doing some weeding this afternoon when I heard a slight noise. Looked up and there was a rat running through the hedge about 4ft from the ground. I didn't realise they would do this but perhaps it explains the mystery of why there are no birds nesting in the hedge?

Rats will go just about anywhere Sue. They're intelligent and versatile and know how to look for their own best advantage. You're right about them being the reason why there's no nests in the hedge.

The last I heard of our local rats, they were eating the recommended "blue" bait.

All good and seemingly working, until we saw the rat poo which was blue also, and continued.....for as long as we put out the bait.

They have eaten it, it has not killed them, they have digested it, it has not killed them, they have poo'ed it, it has not killed them, they are thriving on it, it has not killed them, they have had babies, it has not killed them.....grrrrrr, I really resent feeling that I have assisted in the production of this product!!!

These critters seem increasingly resiliant to the suggested poisons, I certainly would be interested in any new ideas for reducing the rat population!

I would embrace any new ideas, please thank you!

You can buy rat traps - just the same as mouse traps but much bigger- problem is that rats are very intelligent and harder to tempt ( perhaps youngsters??)

You could always get a tom cat!!

stick rat trap into the search on ebay and some come up. our cats catch more than the traps do though. a jack russel will also catch them.

we use to have a lot of rats in one coal mine i worked in.trouble was they would have outside contracters in to put poison down for them. the rats would eat this and breed before they died.the young rats would be use to the poision and eat it like food
