  • Plum tree - White foam oozing

    Hi

I bought a merryweather damson last year, which bore a few fruits. This year it's failed to blossom. There is a small white foamy patch that has developed on the trunk, and some fluid is leaking down the trunk. I wiped this off and it's brown/red in colour. I can't see an obvious crack where this is coming from - I assume this is from where it foams.

Also a green sooty residue has developed on the branches. Any thoughts? I'm really hoping I can save it...

      Firstly welcome to the vine

Looks like slime flux or bacterial wetwood to me, where in the UK are you?

If it is then i think the trees beyond saving but my knowledge is limited

        Hi

I'm in South Leicestershire. The plum is in quite a sheltered spot. I didn't get it into the ground in autumn as intended, so it remained in its pot over winter... This made me think it was slime flux but I was really hoping it wasn't!!

If so, do you think it can be saved?

        Thanks

You really have to wait and see, hopefully FB will pop on and any advice given then will be definitive

            Hi All

Thanks for your help so far. Since I wiped off the foam a couple of weeks ago, it hasn't reappeared. The wood looks a little redder than the rest of the trunk - perhaps damp but there's nothing oozing and no foam. Do you still think it's slime flux?

            Thanks!

I've been looking at your picture and I certainly think the tree has a fungal or bacterial infection, if as you say the wood is looking red, then its dying. If it's not got leaves or flowers buy now then I'd pull it out and replace it.

If you do have to remove it take as much root with it as possible
