 Is it a pest? Can anyone identify this one? Found it walking across the garden, hate to think what size butterfly it will be!! This is a genuine creature, we have also seen a bright acid green lizard in the garden. Phreddy      |

| Wow, that's some beastie! The only caterpillars I know that are that huge are from the hawk moth family - there are different types, mostly named after what they feed on (eg. poplar hawk moth, elephant hawk moth the biggest one - before you say it, no it doesn't feed on elephants!!), but this one seems to be eating cardboard!

| Don't think it's an elephant hawk moth as it's lumpy & hasn't got the 'eyes' but it definitely looks like a moth caterpillar, there's one called a luna moth which has a similar caterpillar but that one doesn't have quite such prominent lumps on it as yours does. It's a whopper anyway & very pretty.
