  • Beetle identification please

Just spotted this little fella on a runner bean leaf in the polytunnel.
Should I be alarmed or pleased?

I think it is a cardinal beetle, VC. It isn't shiny enough for a lily beetle and doesn't have the little dimples on the wing case. Also it is a bit too long.

Good news is it feeds on small flying insects
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Not a lily beetle, they are really pillar box red and very shiny. We used to call VC's beetle blood suckers but I've no idea whether they do or not. Probably just the colour.

            Thanks everyone
I'm sure Jeanie is right with this one - sorry Lottie Delighted that its a goodie, not a baddie. Its a Red-headed Cardinal beetle.
Found some photos of Cardinal and Lily beetles David Element's Wildlife Web Page Beetles 17 - Cardinal and Lily Beetles and "my" beetle is a lot longer and flatter than the Lily.

Fascinating creatures - I like beetles (mostly)

              Yes, it's a Cardinal beetle. Like the Ladybird, it's a gardener's friend...
