Any suggestions on what I can use instead of beer. I had some old cans of beer but have run out and it seems a bit daft buying beer.

Apparently, you can use anything 'yeastie'

I'm planning to do an experiment for my blog, starting this week, with beer (well, cheapo red stripe lager) in half and a bakers yeast mixture in the other.

Bakers yeast is very cheap, about 30p in lidols, but I suspect the slimies might just drink their fill and slither off. I reckon they need to get sozzled to drown but I will be testing my theory over the next few days and let you know at the weekend.

I can't keep buying a round for the slugs

I love the taste of beer and if anyone can come up with a way of trapping it then by damn im in

if you mean as a trap for slugs though, no, beer also rocks there too

I did an experiment with both yeast tablets & blue pellets (even though they do not desolve) in container of water............both methods attracted slugs.

You can dilute the beer or use shandy it still does the job

So basically they will drown as long as you can get them to go in the trap. Will try getting some yeast. Thanks everyone.

I used crushed Brewers Yeast Tablets. Easy to get hold of & fairly cheap.

Had moderate success(caught loads but there was just too many) with jars of beer last year, the beer would get diluted out over time so sacrificing a lid or some cover balanced on a stick is in order this year. Bloody hell though the stench of slugs which had been marinading in stale beer in the hot summer for a few weeks was something else and it hung over the veggie patch.

My old man is bringing me over some copper slugtape in a couple of weeks, has anybody had any results with it?

I've always worried about beer traps attracting slugs from my neighbours' gardens. Is that silly?
Edit- so I end up with more slugs not less

Beer traps worked really well in my experience but be prepared for the smell of decomposing slugs in beer

I would have thought that T£sco value lager at 22p a can was cheaper than any alternative you can come up with. One can will be enough to bait quite a few traps and still have enough to keep in the fridge til they need topping up. You could even drink it if you really wanted, but I wouldn't advise it.

I put any I found in a tray of water last year and found they were sneaky so and so's for managing to climb back out - I don't know if the alcohol content would stop them being able to do this? Would it not need to be quite a deep trap to make sure they've well and truly fallen in?!

I'm trying copper tape this year instead - I don't like killing things if I can help it
