  • Another interesting Roundup study...

Roundup Ready Herbicide May Destroy Your DNA

    Summary:

    • Significant concentrations of the chemical glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide, have been detected in human urine samples; study participants had concentrations of glyphosate that were 5 to 20 times the limit for drinking water
    • Roundup is the most widely used herbicide in the United States, sprayed liberally on genetically modified crops along with gardens, roadsides and lawns
    • Glyphosate has been linked to birth defects, endocrine disruption, DNA damage and other health affects, along with Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS), a serious plant disease, and the creation of superweeds
    • Along with avoiding the use of Roundup around your lawn and garden, you can avoid exposure to glyphosate by boycotting genetically modified foods

Its not just GM foods, many farmers spray cereals with glyphosate prior to harvest in green conditions.

I would never use this stuff......but is there an alternative for farmers? Other than organic?

Clearly by choice we all eat organic but we are a privileged few. Is there something that the farmers can use to maintain the yields and ease of cropping that is safe?

Are there alternatives for the urban gardeners trying to maintain the townscape?

            Loving my allotment!

Simply not true, get your facts right sir!

If it was used in green conditions the crop would be killed. It is applied AFTER the onset of senescence, it cannot get into the grain.

How much? - By 'green conditions' i dont refer to the crop, but the weeds and grasses.

Crops are sprayed with glyphosate in this way!!

Perhaps you should consult the internet, or perhaps some farmers. (or i could post some links to save you time)

I have no idea if it can enter the grain - i didnt say it did?

No need to defend it captainC - it shouldn't be sprayed on crops FULL STOP if all this is known.

Instead of challenging, perhaps you would like to offer proof of your statements.

i read a piece about reducing the amount that gets through into foods somewhere but cant find it... just google 'pre harvest glyphosate' theres 94000 odd hits, have a read... all i said was farmers regularly spray crops with glyphosate prior to harvest, and they do!

I suggest everyone gets their wooly hats on, gloves, scarf, wellies...trek to the nearest farm and ask!

I'll ask the farmer at the back of me. I know he sprayed the fields of rape next to us at some point whilst it was green, with yellow heads. Although I don't know what with.

The point is that we as end consumers are never asked if we want a dose of noxious chemicals with our foodstuffs, are we?

TBH i kind of wish i didnt bother saying anything now.

I just wanted to point out that its not just GM foods that get a dose of Glyphosate.
I only speak from personal experience of dealing with farmers on a daily basis.

I assume its tyhe same as anything you buy from the supermarket, unless you go organic?
Iwould have thought that all grain is cleaned prior to being used!?

I should clarify that i have used round-up, although not in an 'edibles' situation.
