Default Horse chestnut scale on gooseberry

Had some weird fluffy white and black bugs the size of a small ladybird on my gooseberry plant for the last 2 years.

Didn't know what they were until I looked at pics of Horse chestnut scale - Pulvinaria regalis and these seem to fit well... anyone know what these do and how to control them if I should?

I have been prodding them with a 'pointed stick' so far and they go all gooey.
Job Done.
