  • It's raining, what to do?

Hi, so it's raining in the south east of England and this generally never deters me before as previously I was getting my plot ship shape. However, now my plot is fully loaded and there is not an awful lot to do which could allow me to take a weekend out.

But, I would like inspiration for things I could do even though the weather is super miserable...

Otherwise I'm just moping around the house wishing I was there...

Sort your seeds into a different order - by month, or type or colour. When you've done that count the seeds in each packet.

I'd get more seeds started indoors,I use my kitchen when the weathers cold & wet. I need to sow more lettuce & rocket.

So in the end I didn't go to the allotment and instead I have resorted my seeds and started off more beetroot lettuce and herbs.

Feel nicely relaxed and more importantly, dry...

            If it rains again tomorrow....
(and it probably will because I have a bed to dig at the plot)

....the indoor job I have plannned is to guesstimate when current crops will be harvested by and therefore, when to sow follow on crops.
I find I am four to six weeks behind what the books tell me this season....it creeps up each year but this spring has been particularly grim and seems to have held things back.

Housework, it's a good job it rains once in a while or it would never get done!!!!!!!

I was going to say seed sorting I do that or if the kids say they are bored then I get them to do it
Or I draw out plans for next year like plant rotation or surf the internet for stuff I might like to try next year.
I always take books with a pinch of salt. They are written in the picture perfect season. I am planting some runner bean seeds straight in the soil this week. First lot haven't been bothered to grow so I am trying some seeds that I saved last year.

I've been sewing debris net to make wind breaks and cloches using a hand cranked sewing machine I bought for £30. Being hand operated I also use it down on the lotty.

Isn't the rain/bad weather a sign you need to go to a few Nurseries or Garden Centres and go shopping or eye up new Gardening toys?

Wait, when did I need an excuse to do that???

I spent the naff weather part of this weekend in my home Bonsai studio (Spare bedroom if you must!) sowing some flower seeds and also some veg seeds.

I also got my Kärcher steam cleaner out and gave a few of the drawers in my tool cabinet a good old steaming and cleaning as an old bottle of oil or something had leaked and everything in that drawer was coated in gunk...

I've repurposed my tool cabinet from general tools to Bonsai tools and gardening tools seeing as though I no longer have a shed or polytunnel. I brought it up into the Bonsai Studio and to be honest I'm amazed I never did it before, it's great just being able to slide a drawer open and lay my hand on the pair of scissors I want* , or be able to grab the chopstick I need without having to hunt around on a large workbench covered with trees, pots and all manner of other things. At this rate I may well actually start being organised at some point!

                          * When you start working with Bonsai you soon learn one pair of scissors is not near enough and from that point on when you see a pair of a different size, shape or thickness you do not own, you buy them, it becomes a compulsion! I call this the Dremel Syndrome, if you buy one of their Multi Tools you can't resist buying any Attachment, Bit or Gizmo they sell to fit it no matter how odd or little chance there is of you using it. Many marriages have come to an end over this.
