Default First Frost !!!!

What I wasn't expecting this morning in normally warm Berkshire was to go out and have to deforst my car . This then triggered panic that none of my garden is protected yet, I've been watching the weather forcasts every day just to check that my area is not due any frosts and did they predict it? NO!!!!

Well that is the end of the squash growing, the courgette plants look very very sad, the tomatoes are shivering and I'm not happy . So having had to rush off to work late I'm now going to be leaving early to harvest everything that needs harvesting and getting the fleece out of the shed for the rest.

Anyway rant over it was actually a really nice clear crisp morning perfect for gardening if it was a saturday! Although the tempation to pull a sickie and spend the day sorting my sadly neglected patch was very strong this morning

I'm in newtown, south newbury. The frost was still there when i left at 8am but we are in a bit in the middle of no where so that may be why we had frost and the more built up areas didn't

Luckily I picked and cleared my last few tomatoes yesterday, and my courgettes finished a week or so ago - all I have left in the garden are leeks! only got my allotment 3 weeks ago so not much there to worry about either except whether I can get my spade in the ground!!! Have planted my onions and garlic but they'll be ok

One benefit of growing in your garden is that if you hear a frost warning after the 10.00 news, you can nip out and fleece up and remove in the morning before work.
The last thing I want to do is drive to the lottie at that time and fleece up and then remove it next morning in the pitch dark- I think the police would wonder what I was nicking!!!
Allotments require a different approach to frosts- ie have a shorter cropping span!

Mmm. never thought of it like that Nicos. Hope I've made the right decision getting an allotment!

Of course you have vicki. Unfortunately while being able to gyo in the back garden is great not everyone who wants to has enough space. We would if we didn't have a child/rabbit/guinea pigs so a lottie it has to be. As Nicos suggests you can have a shorter cropping span or alternatively take your chances or err on the side of caution and cover up a little earlier than might be needed.

We still haven't had any frost but I do like watching the "steam" rising off the fence panels after a cool evening and on a sunny morning.

First frost in Wiltshire this morning - only light like yours UG, but the grass is white in the shade. Must seriously think about getting in to winter mode.

Very chilly this morning down here but no ground frost. Very little condensation on cars and breath visible. Everything still ok but frost forecast for tonight. Fortunately I dont' have anything to cover at the mo and I changed the growhouse plastic cover for a fleece one a couple of weeks ago.

First frost in Somerset, not enough to finish off the dahlias etc though - suspect it will be the same tonight as it is a tad chilly out there

Was white over round here this morning, and forecast is for a much harder one tonight / tomorrow morning! Time to dig out my old thermals for working on the plot tomorrow methinks!

It was 0C in the growhouse at 10pm tonight. We have moved our guinea pigs inside (they are 8 weeks old and were very quiet and subdued with cool feeling feet etc.) because we don't want to risk losing them. Hutch felt quite cool inside and they have perked up since so deffo right decision. I've got to catch a bus at 6.10 for work tomorrow. Best get to bed.

No frost yet here in Suffolk, but I don't think it'll be long. My lowest recorded so far is 4 degrees, but I am right next to the sea which apparently keeps the temperature up.

First frost here overnight. Glad we bought the guinea pigs indoors . My neighbour was already up and scraping his car when I left this morning which is why I was 50 mins early for work! :eek Only another 14 hours till I can leave!

Spent yesterday evening out with a torch protecting / moving anything tender only to discover this morning that we've escaped getting a frost at all - OK so it's not exactly warm but no signs of ice, even the squashes haven't been touched! Everybody else around here seems to have had one so maybe we live in some kind of tropical pocket, either that or it's a side effect of something the Lever Bros factory is putting out!

First frost here this morning too. Forgot to get my daughter school tights so I was not on the popular list. Hopefully she will have thawed out by 3.15.

I've had dry, sore lips for the last two days. I think it's work that does it. I'll be having to make more lip balms at this rate. Deffo need to make some hand lotions/creams and something for my ankles. Missed the bus this evening so I had to walk 1/2 mile to get one to get down the road. My physio would not be happy.

Feeling a bit guilty that I've been using the car all this week rather than my bike - promised myself that I'd keep it up up over winter cos if I don't it'll be a fight to get fit again in the Spring. Proper frost this morning so hopefully everything is OK in the greenhouse, didn't have time to check this morning.
