And don't forget the clocks go forward at the end of march for an extra hours daylight too.

Today in Lerwick we celebrate Up-Helly-Aa, a Viking Fire Festival. Fire Festivals are held all over Shetland at this time of the year, but Lerwick is the biggest. It is always held on the last Tuesday in January and curiously afterwards we notice the daylight hours increasing on a daily basis. It is a celebration that the winter is over (ha ha - don;t believe that one!) but I always feel it is a turning point for daylight. Its a celebration that we've come through the dark months of December and January and its all looking forward from now on.

It is also a BIG party (Shetland knows how to party!). A big procession this morning through the town (Jarl Squad) and a torchlight procession tonight (1000 guizers), where the galley is towed around the town and then set alight. Following that there are parties in ten halls in Lerwick from 9pm to 9am tomorrow morning, each Squad going around all ten halls and entertaining the hostesses and guests. There is NEVER a cancellation for weather!

Think I saw something of this on the TV last year - looked like a LOT of drink was had by all. Nice to have something to look forward to round this time of year.

Hello Jennie, enjoy your Fire Festival. I hope tomorrow has been Cancelled ! and it's a duvet day for everybody.

Hello Craigpugh, the days get longer by 28 minutes a week until 23rd June, then get shorter by 28 minutes a week until 23rd Dec, so on a rough calculation you can work it out yourself. Once the clocks go forward in March it's light til about 8pm. So something to look forward to.

Go onto the BBC News website, you can pick your hometown 5 day weather forecast which includes sunrise and sunset times and also has a good UK weather guide, gardening, and longterm forecasts (not always totally accurate but they use computers instead of things like seaweed and local observations)

Can't wack seaweed and a pine cone for predicting the weather!!

In no other job would you still be employed if you got it wrong so often!!
I am sure to be a good weather man, your CV requisite would be that you are a good guesser!

I lived in California for a while and used to say that being a weather forecaster in the San Francisco Bay area in summertime must be about the most boring job in the world. We had a thunder storm one August evening and it was actually front page headlines next day!!!!!

Beats 'Scorchio' every day, but at least here we get weather. I once worked with a girl from Finland. She commented that she had never been in a country where they had all four seasons in one day, most days!

I do crewing for a hot air balloon team and the pilot pays for a special weather forecast speaking to a forecaster and discussing wind speeds at different hieghts etc and they still get it wrong but when its pointed out to them they just say its not an exact science

Ditto DDL, Mr D and I would love to go to something like that! Perhaps we should organise our own, tho I dont think burning a rowing boat in the Ship Canal would have quite the same impact! lol!
