Apparently 87 mph so far!

Still here and so is my polytunnel (Thank heavens!), but OH just phoned and said the housing around the gas cannisters has gone completely and they are laying on the ground! He's not sure whether they are attached still!! It is too windy to go out and see

Tingwall is very exposed but here in Lerwick at the moment its a little more sheltered. Although i can see the sea from the office window and it is horrendous.

Hi Jennie,

You stay safe up there, Birdie Wife has been on-line but wonder how Rat is doing?

Well, I survived. At 8:45 this morning, all 16 stone of me was blown over whilst lifting leeks ! I don't know who got the bigger shock, me, the puppy or the leeks I landed on.
Spent an hour between 13:00 and 14:00 standing in the doorway of my shed, watching my polytunnel preparing for take-off - to say my heart was in my mouth would be putting it mildly. I've seen it in high winds before, but this one hour spell was something else.
One annoying thing, the rain pretty much stayed away until tonight - the gritters are out, ice is forecast and it's snowing outside

Snowing here too Rat. Just got in from a drama rehearsal (we open next Wednesday, so absolutely CRITICAL I got in!) and the snow was lying quite thickly on the higher ground. Snow and strong winds together meant crazy driving conditions, so I just slowed down - the usual 15 minute journey into Lerwick took me 25 mins!

Absolutely bitterly cold

Glad your polytunnel survived SR. I managed to check mine with a torch tonight at 5.30pm and it looks reasonably ok (bit of a larger tear in the end wall) and the greenhouse looks sound (oh thank goodness). But the winds did get up again tonight and I know the door on the air raid shelter (yes we have an above ground air raid shelter!) has blown in and the lovely new sit on lawnmower is exposed to the elements. I managed to cover it with a old sail from the boat.

No sailings of any ferries tonight to the mainland - apparently an 8 metre swell (doesn't bear thinking about) and the local island ferries have not sailed since 11 this morning.

Quite a storm .............

Snow was lying here from about 100m above sea level, though it's now lying about 200m above sea level. Not as windy today but bitterly cold and wet.

Snow has all gone. Today was the Easter Ross Ploughing Match and as usual, it absolutely tipped it with rain - nae luck for the boys on the vintage machines !!
Still getting heavy showers as I type and the wind is getting up again - not as bad as Thursday but still not pleasant.

Been very calm now for a week - virtually no wind at times and below freezing at night.

Actually rather pleasant!

Not so bad here Diana, but heard that Orkney had been worse these last couple of days. Our boat from Aberdeen and Kirkwall was late in this morning as the sea was so rough last night.

Yesterday we had quite alot of snow showers, and it did lie for a while, so driving conditions were a bit hairy. Also freezing temperatures. Today is nicely brisk, with a gentle breeze and its DRY!

Did'nt realize how bad the weather was in Scotland or the islands until i read your postings. We have had it mild here in comparison. Hope all your poly tunnels and greenhouses stay put.

Well Bramble its the wind is our main problem unlike Jenny who has more snow and frost than we do on the North Isle I am told that on our Island they only had 1 frost last year and as this is our first winter it will be interesting to see this year as I am used to living in Perthshire which is cold cold cold.

Blowing a gale here again tonight so no boats again.

Blowing a gale here too! Bad forecast for tonight, possible Storm Force 10 winds from the NW. All boat sailings to and from Shetland have been cancelled. It is bitterly cold too with intermittent snow and hail showers.

Brrrr.........

Its actually been very calm here for nearly two weeks now. Bit of a blow the other night (F9 gale forecast but didnt materialise) but otherwise really calm. Very cold and crisp though and today we had a hail shower that left everywhere white!

First really hard proper frost last night - puddles stayed iced all day, ruts stayed hard etc etc - might help to dry the ground out a bit. We've just had the wettest November for 10 years so here's hoping.

Well we have been having a lovely week here in Orkney sun by day and frost at night, which apparently is quite unusual, lets hope it last for the holiday.

Anybody know if we are going to get a white Christmas up here?

The Halladale river is well iced up now, temps here have barely gone above 3 or 4 and well below freezing at night (usually around -10 to -15degC). I was watching the formation of pancake ice near the bank the other morning, very odd to see! Find the same in the Arctic, it's one of the precursors to major ice sheets.

We have now had three days of really hard nights - between -7 and -5 with temops barely reaching +2 during the day - freezing fog all day today too. Didn't see it myself but there is a little bay on the firth near one of my customers and he swears it started to freeze over yesterday (needs to be 'kin cold to freeze seawater !!)
Forecast to stay this way til at leat Christmas Eve, when no doubbt it will absolutely tip it with rain all day, in time for a very muddy Christmas!
