  • yet another (silly) question!

'grief, this gardening lark is complicated! have finally got my small bed ready to put some babies into tomorow, and in the meantime i have sown salad, iceberg lettuce, strawberries and rhubarb into tubs. i am now running out of containers! i want to do some italian salad, and have an old wheelbarrow which is incredibly deep, and currently filled to 5" from the top, with soil and some bulbs, i think they were crocus, stipey leaves, and they were yellow and purple. the flowers have gone, but the leaves are still nice and green, not dying back. heres the question- can i just put 5" of fresh soil on top of the bulbs, and sow my salad crop on top, leaving the current residents of barrow undisturbed? i forgot to say, the bulbs are very close to the surface, so wont be too buried for next year. also, should i chop the leaves off of the bulbs first? sorry- i am sure this is a stupid question, for all experienced gardener!

If you want crocuses next year, you need to let the leaves photosynthesise to feed the bulbs.
ie, don't cut the leaves off or bury them

I always seem to plant my flowering bulbs too shallowly they need to be planted at least 2 x their height - so top the levels up and go for it!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

thank you both- i didnt want to wait for them to die down, but i dont want to kill them either! will top them up with soil, then, but not today- it's absolutely drenched outside, and still raining lightly. mind you, we really needed the rain, but best laid plans, etc.--- having finally got my bed sorted ready to plant in, i was going to put my young plants in today, and sow some more seeds- maybe tomorow!
