    Yellow tips on onions

    Hi, sorry, I have another question. I have searched this forum and googled a fair bit to find out the cause of this and am still not quite sure what to do about it. Other than white rot, which I don't think it is but haven't checked yet, lack of water or low nitrogen seem to be the most common cause. It may be lack of water but if that's the case we've certainly had enough rain these last two days to help resolve that! If it's low nitrogen the suggestion seemed to be human wee (I'm not going there ) or chicken poo. I think Epsom salts were also mentioned somewhere as well as Sulphate of Ammonia. Is anyone else having this problem and what have you used to remedy it?

    Some of mine are doing the same. Also some shallots. Lets hope someone can steer us in the right direction.

      They are maybe just naturally dying off as are ready to pick........is it happening to them all or just some.

          It's just some leaves. I didn't think they'd start going yellow yet as I'm not expecting to be able to harvest them until July.

          I've attached a photo but think it's upside down for some reason

            ..........They look ok to me. I'd give them a last feed & by the time the leaves have died down it won't be far off July.........Where's AP when you need him.

              Oops. Should I have been feeding them? I guess the soil I planted them is was quite rich (plenty of manure, compost and even a load of veg peelings at the bottom) so that may have sustained them so far. What do you feed yours with?

                I wouldn't worry too much, have just checked mine and a couple have yellow tips. It'll be a while before they die down giving the bulb time to swell.

                  Sammie,

                  Is that a true raised bed or a container? The reason I ask is that if it is a container they will need a feed at some stage for sure. Both a friend and I grow in containers and have proved to ourselves they will not go a full season without a feed. I have just given mine a wash with Miracle Grow a high nitrogen feed, but if you want to be organic a good dose of liquid seaweed will help.

                    Someone call? I certainly wouldn't be concerned after looking at the pic. if you think they need a wee perk up, as Pottie suggests, give them a feed of liquid seaweed

                        It is a raised bed rather than a container. Our soil is clay so we dug the worst out, chucked in a good amount of veg peelings then topped up with topsoil, compost and manure.

                        Thank you all for your reassurance, that's very comforting, a dose of liquid seaweed it is then!
