  • Worms and potatoes

I know this might very well be a silly question, but are worms in with your potatoes a welcome friendly site, doing a lot of underground gardening or are they a wee menace that might eat through your tubers as a midnight snack?

    Just wondered....

    I am container growing.

    Ta!

I don't think earthworms have the mouthparts to eat spuds. Wireworms and slugs are the pests that will cause damage.

will they be a boon though, or needn't i concern myself with it?

        Worms are your friends.

If you don't like them in your containers, relocate them to your borders.

I don;t think that they will be a boon, but they won't do your spuds any ill either.

they truly are my friends, so i have been relocating them just to be on the safe side, but i wondered if it would be beneficial to my tatties to keep them in there??

They are great for your soil (they aerate the soil, as I'm sure you know, and pull down manure/leaf mold etc and thus are beneficial to the soil structure), but as you have your tatties in containers with compost, I don't thing that they will add anything but extra protein if you are careless when fishing out the tubers!

I'd continue with your worm rehabilitation scheme!

LOL aren't there the tiger slugs or something that actually live in your garden as predators to other nasties??

might be getting a wee bit lost in slug-dom....

The ones in my garden are certainly as voracious as tigers, but I've got sharp scissors. I've never heard of these, but I wouldn't mind a few.

I was going to say that earthworms eat earth.
but then realised that tiger worms don't eat tigers.
