  • Winter Tares Spacing?

My winter tares arrived today and the sowing instruction states to broadcast sow 16g per square metre (as does every website I've looked at)

I would much rather sow in drills but don't really know the growing habbit of tares to guestimate spacing.

    Any ideas?

Judging from this picture the rows appear to be about 9" apart, for seed spacing I would think you are looking at 5 rows in a metre width, so assuming that is correct, you are looking at a touch over 3g per linear metre

Ahh,may have found why they recommend broadcast sowing ............

sow the seeds by broadcast sowing (i.e. scattering evenly) for good coverage. Rows can be sown but are not as good for weed suppression.

I find broad casting a pain in the butt on (relatively small) beds, especially as raking can cause swathes. However, if you want good suppression and you don't want to overplant it is the best method. If you are just growing for green manure drills are fine. The sowing recommendations all come from commercial use and I am not sure if would not be better to sow at a heavier rate in the garden. If Two Sheds is around it would be interesting to have her take on sowing rate.

Turns out I got it wrong, it was 5.5g per square meter, which worked out at 100 seeds. I weighed and calculated and then just eyeballed it and chucked them on

          Thanks for the replies.
