I am growing (they are already up) a variety called Pisello Rampicante Gigante Svizzero. They grow when staked about 6' tall. My question is - has anyone grown them before?. Do I need to protect from birds, if I do any suggestions as to how, especially as they grow so tall? I can keep lower growing veg protected but not so easy with the tall vegetables

I know these can be started quite early, in Spring - but I've never heard of them growing through winter. A cold snap/hard frost would finish them off
If you do try them through the winter, I wouldn't think they'd get too tall to be covered with some netting to stop the birds from getting at them. -
Yes, I thought that as well but according to the packet and a national newspaper they CAN be grown through the winter and can be planted from October ish. So watch this space and we will see.
So back to my original question, any ideas for protecting them?

what are they growing against? My raised bed is along a fence - so I have put hooks in the top of the fence. I got a long piece of netting, stapled it into the edge of the raised bed (you could maybe stake instead if yours are in the ground) and then stretch it up to the hooks on the top - I also put some hooks on the side to tuck it in on the sides.Comment
