  • Winter planting

I'm still a relative novice - just finished our first full season and very pleased with the results.( many thanks to every one here !!) We have cleared a lot of our beds , but I'm wondering what I can plant out now to over winter.
We also have a greenouse, the tomatoes plants will be ready to to be removed in a week maybe- so again what can I grow over the winter in there?

Is it ok to put the old tomato plants (minus roots ) in the compost bin. I think ok - hubby not too sure.

Yes, you can compost tomato plants.

There are loads of things that can be overwintered; have a read of the thread below and you can see what everyone is doing.

Thanks zazen - it makes good reading and very helpful !
A bit sad today because we've just eaten the last of our courgettes - we've been eating them since about June/july and and these were some overgrown ones which I kept and have made them into yummy soup!! - recipe off here of course! Felt a bit sad though when I had to BUY some today from the farm shop !!!! can't quite bring myself to go to the supermarket yet though !

        Hi Margo
I have just planted garlic, overwintering onions, feltham early peas and broad
beans down the lotty. I have also planted some young winter hardy lettuces where my tomato plants were growing during the summer in the greenhouse.

I tend to fill my greenhouse with winter brassicas planted in the same pots and compost that the tomatoes were in. Makes good use of the greenhouse in winter and if I have too many brassicas the chooks relish any that are left over!
