Default Winter growing green manure?

Hope to get my leek trench converted to a carrot trench during the next few days. I am importing a rootzone mix into the sub-layer. It's 50/50 screened sand and topsoil. Once thats in (got half done up til now) I will replace the screened topsoil and this should give me a good 2'6" of soil to grow my carrots in. As I am not growing long carrots for show, this should be ok.

Sorry for beating around the bush, but this is my question:- rather than leaving the soil bare until I sow my carrots I fancy growing a green manure crop! What green manure will germinate in cold weather and be usable by May though? With it being carrots, and carrots not liking fresh manure, I may just skim it off and use it elsewhere, just as you know, I hate to see bare soil had thought about broad beans as I have a couple of packets spare but the nitro fixation may not suit the carrots?: Any ideas anyone?

2`6" of soil, are you growing carrots or orange fence posts?

Wth the weather being really odd its probably mild enough to grow most green manures and just over if required.

Yeah! May have to settle for the stump rooted variety! Lol

If I was really serious about growing carrots, like some of the guys at the lottie I'd have them in forty gallon drums or use the old crowbar spun around in the soil trick!

I am determined to get some reasonable carrots this year!

You are probably right though, the way this weather is going I'll be planting Banana trees next! so I will possibly get away with any green manure
