What to sow now for winter crops? Am I too late for sowing leeks? I have some in and growing away nicely - but not sure if it's too late for more sowings.

What's on your plan for winter crops?

If you sow leeks now they'll still grow but will be small. Turnips can also be sown but they are not usually as hardy as swedes. Winter Density and AYR lettuce together with the winter hardy White Lisbon spring onions will give you some salad material.

Ohhh i'm interested in this thread, never sowed vegetables for winter before so have no idea what to put in our little plot of land.
I have areas that have potatoes, beans and peas which will all be coming out soon and would love to know what to put in their place for winter. I've been looking at the thread for Christmas potatoes and all ready have a few leeks which are slowly growing.

          Any help would be appreciated!

Along with the Sprouts and leek already planted, I have resently sown two variety of cabbage. Will also sow Pak Choi, winter lettuce and perpetual spinach late August for winter harvest.

Im having to be quite selective with my winter crops due to space issues. Ive already had to ditch the cabbage coz it got too big!
So far Ive leeks, brussel sprouts, chard and kale (which Im already harvesting). I plan on doing corn salad and perpetual spinach late august.....and now I know there is a variety of spring onion for winter I expect I'll get me some of that too!

I went through Real Seeds suggestions for winter veg and picked the ones I liked the look of - ended up with some winter and some overwintering:

                Overwintering:
Paris Early White onion (plus we already have some Senshyu Yellow to sow)
Baccalan de Rennes - Spring cabbage

                Eat during winter:
Winter radish (apparently more like a turnip once cooked)
                Dragon's Tongue
                Early Mizuana

Plus at this rate all my brassicas will be ready in winter - they're still effectively stocky seedlings at the moment.

And collard greens. Sowed some in spring and they did well(until the pigeons). Have another variety to sow for winter greens.

Winter radish, perpetual spinach, turnips, winter lettuces - Rouge de Grenoble this year.
Leeks, kales red, white & savoy cabbage are in. I'm going to try beetroot under fleece, too, although I suspect it'll just be slug food.
And planning ahead, sowing spring cabbage today. Once I shut the computer down...
