  • will plants in the greenhouse need watering over winter?

With frost on the near horizon i have moved some of my plants into an unheated greenhouse. Will these need watering at all to get them through the months?

They will if they get dry. You need to keep checking, like this

Obviously nowhere near as much as in summer and if it is something you are keeping frost free but will be dormant in a pot then probably it doesn't need anything until spring - cold and wet are real killers. However if you're growing stuff then they will need a bit every now and again. As mentioned above, just keep an eye and give some when needed but don't go overboard as it will take a long while to dry out and things grow very slowly at best in the cold dark nights.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Strawberries are very hardy and don't really need to be taken inside and indeed benefit from exposure to frost. Keep your frost free spaces for plants that need protection.

                  Agreed!

I grow quite a bit of stuff indoors during winter but water very infrequently. (On average once a fortnight I reckon)

If your strawberries are in terracotta pots, put the pots on feet- or raise them up - that'll help to stop the pots splitting with the frost.

Strawberries don't need to be in a greenhouse. Fuchsias need to be kept fairly dry, but not to the point of dessication. More plants are lost to drowning in cold wet compost during the winter then to being kept cold but dry.

the strawberries are in plastic pots so it's fine on that front =). Also how do they benefit from the frost? and will freshly made (about a month old) runner seedlings survive? I lost a small amount of them from last years bad winter

My strawbs are all outside all year, even the runners/babies. The only time that cold does damage is a late spring frost when the flowers are out. This is the only time you'd need to protect strawbs from frost
