  • Will homemade insect deterrent affect taste?

I have come across a recipe, online, to make my own organic insect deterrent which involves using onion, garlic, mint and lavender and which I'm going to have a go at tonight, in an attempt to sort out the flea beetle and greenfly problems I'm currently experiencing.

My only concern is whether or not the ingredients (all of them strong tasting lets be honest) will affect the taste of the vegetables I intend to use it on?

Leeks and mangetout will be sprayed as well as ALL the salad which includes: Rocket; Land Cress; various cos, rossa, iceburg lettuces; pok choi; and spinach.

When I mentioned to OH that adding garlic to the dishwash water spray I have used on the leeks, had been suggested, he got all uppity about tainting the taste of the leeks (he loves garlic and he loves leeks but he doesn't want garlic flavoured leeks unless the garlic has been added as part of the cooking process ).

I can just imagine his reaction to this new recipe .

So what do you think? Will the flavours of the components of the spray, transfer themselves to the crops I intend to use it on?

    Many thanks

That'd certainly stop him saying my home grown new potatoes are as bland as those from the supermarket (he's rapidly digging himself a big hole in which I will be burying him very, very soon ).

Well I'm going to try this recipe anyway - it has to be better than spraying chemicals on everything and I'm sure the friendly wildlife will appreciate the organic method.

If you use the recipe, I suggest don't tell him - I'm guessing it won't affect the taste of your produce. You know the saying, What the eye don't see, won't cause bother.
