I used to buy Wilko sets.

Then I got white rot on the plot.

    Now I don't. Just a heads-up

Maybe a bit hard on the supplier. We all take a risk of importing the disease by planting sets. The problem lies with producer of the sets and not the retailer. Difficult to see how the retailer could screen the sets to check for disease.

I wonder whether washing any onion sets in a mild solution of bleach to neutralise any spores could counteract the problem of whiterot transference? (just a thought!)

My 2 local Wilco's store garden sections are full of Halloween junk.

I think it's a bit hard on me: I didn't have white rot until I used Wilko sets, and now I have it for the foreseeable future. I think I have a right to be miffed, actually.

(and consumer law in the UK holds the retailer responsible)

The top leek growers give their leek heads a 24 hour bath in a bleach solution( how strong is a question as in a series of two DVD's one grower mentions 10 :1, 20:1 and 25:1) before taking off pips. Onion sets should be able to take the same sort of punishment but whether it would be effective is a different question as the bleach solution would be unlikely to permeate beyond the outside leaves.

Does it need to permeate beyond the outer leaves though? As white rot is a soil born fungus which attacks the roots first, the main problem areas would be external and the basal plate of the set which would be in direct contact with the solution?
