found a split turnip today, it was only the side of a tennis ball but it was split from the root up. Any ideas what causes this?

Probably erratic watering - it happens with tomatoes too but then the skin actually splits open. Its hard to control the rain - dry spells, then deluges! -

I eat mine when they're quite a bit smaller than that as I find they're tastier
