  • Why did the watermelons wilt?

    Hello everyone,

I thought I'd try to grow a few watermelons this year in my greenhouse (Anguria valentina F1 hybrid- bred in Europe for cooler conditions).
I haven't been able to find much info about growing them except on the seed packet. Following the seed packet instructions I started them indoors in February in individual pots as stated and watched them grow really well. They unfortunately started flowering around March and I had to hold them back until April when I planted them into grow bags and pots.

They got a greenfly infestation just before I put them out into the greenhouse, but I hosed all the greenfly off (I am an organic gardnener) and I thought the plants were OK. Once in the greenhouse they soon became infested again and then started wilting, even though I had removed all the greenfly each time.

Do you think they had already became too weak from the infestation? What could have caused the wilting as I didn't water them at the base of the stem, but from a little way away as advised, to prevent stem rot.

P.s Where are all the ladybirds? I am in Leeds and haven't seen one single ladybird as of yet!

    Hi Adrastea,
Can't help with the watermelons I'm afraid as I have never tried to grow them however, I also want to know where the ladybirds are. There's an aphid feast awaiting them on my cherry tree and I haven't seen a single one this year
