    who was it that wanted sloes??

    went to lidl before to pick up some fruit bushes, and noticed they had hedging plants and some of them were sloes ...... just thought i'd mention it as i can't remember who, and i'm too lazy to search

          Lots of people are looking for sloes this year because the wild ones haven't cropped very well at all this season, possibly because we had such a dry spring the flowers didn't set
          I planted half a dozen Blackthorn (sloe bushes) as a hedge on the lottie last winter and they seem to have taken well. Might have to pop into Lidl and get some more for my other boundary

            I asked what they looked like when I went picking blackberries as I didnt know if some that I found were sloes or not.

              it should not be hard to find who complained they could not find sloes because they post that they could not find them on at least 5 message boards.
              Also if you can not tell the difference between sloes and blackberries you need to lay off the gin.

                Result! It wasn't me who asked but I've been planning on getting round to doing my native hedge for ages and your post prompted me out in the horrid miserable weather down to Lidl. I've now got blackthorn, hawthorn and hedging roses. Only £2.69 for 10 - bargain.

                    I don't think Jackie was confusing sloes with blackberries. She said that whilst blackberrying she found something which could have been sloes but as she'd never seen them before, she wasn't sure. Fair enough, there are other fruits which look like sloes, including wild plum/bullace and the odd one or 2 are poisonous (although the leaves etc are very different). It's better to be safe than sorry isn't it?

                      I have bought a pack of the sloe plants today - thanks for posting that they were available! Hope Madmax agrees that they will be a good screening hedge in the garden - might even cut down the hawthorn that keeps prickling me when (or should I say if) they take!
