You can buy some dried shop ones for cooking and sow them. People do it with bean mixtures too, separating them out. There's a specific variety to grow but it's not called 'red kidney bean' - Two sheds grows it - she'll fill us in!

Many thanks, i've found some but now i'm confused.

I want to dry the beans for cooking bean burgers etc as we are eating less meat all the time I've already got a climing Borlotto would this be enough or am I right to grow a few different ones for drying.

I would prefer climing but have an area of 23ft by 4ft so guessing i could fit a lot of dwarf bush types.

You could use lots of types for a bean burger. The borlotti are great - they just aren't red. If that doesn't bother you, go with those.

You can grow one type, or alot of types; just leave them on the plant to mature and dry.

If you grow them for drying, you need more plants then for green beans as when you pick the green beans they keep producing whereas if you grow for drying they will stop producing.

Canadian Wonder are dwarfs; but still produce a fair few on each plant.

Climbing are mostly grown as rows, whereas with dwarfs you can plant them in blocks much closer together so more per square cm than climbing - but climbing produce more actual pods.

They were excellent and the ones I left on the plant were purposely for seed, the others being eaten as string beans!

so if growing drying beans - you don't harvest any beans until all dry
if growing for seed - you can harvest some beans and leave later ones to dry

                          Marathon.

Go to the supermarket and pick up a bag of dried red kidney beans. Or pinto beans [best for chillis], or borlottis.....

                          Once the soil is warm.....

Sow a load in a square bed, and put a cane at each corner. Tie some string about 6 inches up round all 4 canes. Then again at 12 inches.

Pick some green beans if you want, or leave the beans to carry on growing until the pods dry out. Then pick them, de-pod them and leave them in the airing cupboard to dry out completely. You can treat these just like the ones in the dried bean packet.

Honestly, don't over think it!!! Just sow a load and let them grow. If you sow half a packet of the dried beans, you will have enough for chillis/bean burgers etc for months and months and months......

I would think that its the harvesting of some that allows the others to keep growing?

The first sentence.......not too sure about! The second sentence.....all I can say is it works for me!

Two sheds is our resident bean person so she could answer better!
