Does anyone grow White Sprouting broccoli and if you do, when would you expect to pick it?
This is rather embarrassing but, I think I have some! I thought it was PSB but there are no signs of sprouting bits and the leaves are green, not a hint of purple. Can't even remember where the plants came from but they've been there for months, under netting, doing very little, until recently - they're growing.

VC if I remember correctly there is a variety of WSB thats a very late performer. April/May springs to mind.

I had a feeling that White was later than purple. Whatever it may be, as long as I get to eat it before the caterpillars, I'm happy! Thanks,

I grow it too VC, and have been picking it for about 6 weeks, in fact a couple of plants have come out now as the spears have got too spindly, and I have 2 left to harvest from. Packet just say Unwins Early White Sprouting Broccoli, no varietal name. You just can't find it in the shops anywhere and I think it is nicer than the PSB so I've grown some for the last few years at home and now on the lottie.

        Pick and enjoy! Nommmmmm
        Are y'oroight booy?

Thanks Vince. Mine is in a very poor position, under trees, so I'm not surprised its a late developer. I really hope it turns into something edible after your recommendation!

I've grown 'nine Star perennial' caulis before, which to me, were just an 'off white' sprouting brocolli. Can't remember what time of year they headed up but do remember that some that went to seed had white flowers rather than the usual yellow ones.
Hopefully you'll never see the flowers though as you'll have picked and scranned it all!

I grew it a few years ago.. Yes, it seems to be in the ground for a long time, but once it starts cropping its a cut and come again plant. More like tiny cauliflowers than white broccoli. A good thing to have as a stop gap veg when the winter stuff is done and the summer has yet to mature.
If you have space, then its worth growing.

I've grown some in the past, I think that it was called White Star or something like that and to be honest I found the normal standard PSB much nicer and a lot more tender so I've not bothered again.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My White SB is starting to head up and growing skywards by the minute . Its under netting and there's not enough headroom for it now. Tomorrow I'll find some more netting and give it space to grow.
