  • Where do you dry your onions ?

    Hi there
I have lifted all of my onions now, they are a meal size each and unfortunately when I got back from hols they were over run with lemon balm, tried to weed, no joy I just pulled up onions with the weeds. Now I have racks on which to lay them but where shall I get them to dry out ? The weather isn't so great so presumably they will rot if I leave them outside to dry. Is it too hot indoors ? Do they need light ? Do I leave the leaves on to dry as well ?

A mate of mine says his dad used to just hang them up in the garage. Leave the leaves on if you're planning on stringing them up, or just trim the excess off.

I leave the leaves on to dry unless they have obvious damage look mouldy rotten etc, once dry I remove the roots and leaves, wipe off as much soil as I can and depending on size either string or put in mesh bags. At the moment they are hanging in the shed (door is always open so some light) but in the colder months they will move into a walk in attic.

I spread them out on a rack in the shed. Yes, it's a big shed!

I've built a frame that I saw in one of my old Uk gardenming mags and hang them up, tails downwards, to dry out, works fine.

I only have a few so I dry them in the greenhouse then put them in a mesh bag in the shed next to the garlic. It's a very smelly shed!

Well I have chopped off the longest green bits and they are now on racks in the shed with my garlic. My shed smells like a pizzeria but fingers crossed it works as Ive got LOADS of onions to dry. x

Under the car port, in the shed or in the garage.

On the window ledge in the conservatory, smelly and messy but does the job for a few weeks until dry enough to be stored in garage.

Mine are in four trays on my living room floor...along with five marrows and a pumpkin, oh and the garlic....
Nowhere else for them to go and they are very artistically arranged so I can claim it is an art installation when visitors call. Apart from the cats claiming one every now and then for a game of footer, they're no problem, now I've remembered to watch my step as I come through the door.

Will they be ok laid out in a greenhouse? How long do you know how to leave them to dry out for? Last question Is there a preferred place to store the onion bag once they're full o' onions? I don't have a huge house so trying to think of options.
