Where do i get comfrey???

    Where do i get comfrey???

    Hi all
    Im always reading on the threads that lots of you use comfrey as a fertilizer but i have never found a plant or seeds for sale.
    Is this because it is more or less a weed? And if so where can i buy it?

    I got mine from ebay...bocking 14 is the variety that doesn't seed itself all over the place.

          it grows EVERYWHERE around us. I take a big empty milk carton when i'm out walking the dog and pop some leaves in, then i fillwith water when i get back, put the lidon a nd leave for a few weeks - hey presto!

              I wouldnt have a clue what to look for to be honest..
              Would prob end up with a bucket full weeds & what the dog deposited!!!

                I originally got mine from ebay (bocking 14) - about £5 for 6. A year on I've had to move a couple and now have 10 after splitting up the moved two.

                If you are on an allotment site one of your neighbours might have some to spare?

                  I'd go to a garden centre and find 'borage'...then if anyone has anything that looks like it, chop the leaves and use that as scottishnewbie says.

                  I wanted some as I want a big supply, and they are planted at the edge of one of my compost heaps....and nobody around our way had any.

                  Now, although mine didn't flower as I moved it mid summer....I am finding it all over the place, around the edges of the plot and elsewhere. So it must have been hiding from me all last year.

                    Im fairly new on the plot & the few i have spoken to didnt seem to rate it much,prefering to use chicken pellets & manure..
                    I was looking for a cheaper option so at £5 for 6 sounds a bargain to me.

                      Borage is wonderful, as is comfrey, i hasten to add, mine is all self seeding,no infertile stock for me, vive la revolution!! makes great fertiliser.
                      Lovage is pretty good too, stick it in your trainers, as a deoderiser

                        Two Sheds very kindly sent me some root cuttings last autumn and I planted them in a bucket - I now have about 5 growing really well. They will go out into the lottie in the next week or two

                        I made the mistake of buying comfrey seeds but DON'T. I listened to the very strongly worded advice on here not to buy the stuff that grows from seed as it will set more seed and take over the world the moment you turn your back, apparently it is a b*gger to remove if any plants get established where you don't want them to because the roots go so deep (that's what makes them so good as a fertiliser plant, they suck up nutrients that other plants can't reach!) I'm thinking idly of sprinkling my seeds somewhere in the local countryside and giving myself a copious source of "wild" comfrey - but have a feeling that would be grossly irresponsible...

                        Bocking 14 all the way, it doesn't set fertile seed.

                            As long as you're comfreytable about doing it , they're wild seeds anyway. Nature has a way of controlling things

                              got mine from eBay too. About £2 per plant - but you can then increase your own stock in future years.
