Grow Your Own Magazine

I am growing some sunburst squash (yellow pattypans) in large pots. They are looking very well, despite the horrendous winds over the past weeks, but strangely they have plenty of female flowers on the way, but no male ones showing yet. As they won't be fertilised I picked the 2 that were in flower today and stuffed the flowers, leaving the tiny squash in place. I just made up the stuffing recipe, breadcrumbs, marjoram, thyme and chives from the garden, with some frozen peas and a little butter. The family thought they looked pretty strange, but my son (17) was braver than OH and thought it pretty good.
I hope the boys turn up soon though, picking that small seems such a shame, although I know they will just rot off if I don't! I've never had squash/courgette/marrows produce female flowers first before.

If you get hold of a Greek recipe book there should be a recipe for stuffed zuccini flowers! or stuffed vine leaves(filling same) Very nice starter!

Be patient, the lads will turn up eventually. Till then use the flowers to eat. As well as stuffing them you can dip them in a light batter and deep-fry

Yeah, last year with my pumpkins and squashes I had the same thing, it's apparently what they do. All of mine this year aren't even at the flowering stage.
