Having spent what felt like ages with window sills full of plants last year, I am going to wait until April this year

February I think. They seem ready to put out in the big greenhouse around mid-April then, so I only have to run the gas heater at night, and the plants don't get a check in growth. They spend about a month in the little greenhouse in the garden first, with an electric heater, so they get plenty of light.

Mid-January for beefsteak/plum varieties. Also for Stupice and Bloody Butcher varieties to ensure the earliest crop. Mid-March for cherry varieties.

Same as last year - Feb for the long season beefsteaks and March for the rest. I put them into a cold greenhouse eventually so I don't want them ready too soon.

Some mini cherry types in Feb, other inside ones in March and the outdoor ones in early April. Have tried earlier and don't find any advantage and my window ledges will already be full of peppers / chillies which I find do benefit from early sowing.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Think I will start mine Jan-Feb on a heated propergator tray in greenhouse. Will also do some cherry toms for hanging baskets.

February. I'll start them in the conservatory - there will be enough light by then. They can stay there until it's suitable to put them outdoors.

I was thinking about Boxing Day.
I don't have a greenhouse or conservatory so I want to give them as long a season as possible to ripen.
Can keep them indoors for a while, until they are big enough to go out.

I'm going for early Feb this year, with the chillies going in earlier. I took part in the early tomato growing trial, and I did find the plants got a bit too big for the space I had indoors, so they had to go into the greenhouse very early. I got away with it, by using fleeces etc, but they did go a bit blue where they got chilled. The first fruit was ready 1st June, but they didn't start cropping well until early July, the time I usually get fruit from a Feb sowing.
Just adding that I still have 3 plants growing, flowering and fruiting in the greenhouse at the moment I will have to clear them soon, but its been great to say I'm still picking tomatoes in December , even if there's not been many.

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

One or two with Weekend Wellies a few days after Christmas [need to check the right moon date], and the mains in Feb...depending on the weather in all honesty.

I have (as yet) an unheated fully glazed shed (my sil made it for me). The temp doesn't ever seem to go below 2/3. Can I start chilli and toms in heated propagator in that in Jan.

I started my toms off in Jan last year in an unheated greenhouse & they were fine. They were in a heated propagator.
