  • When are you sowing your Tomato Seed?

My packets are saying “Jan-Mar”. Just wondered when everyone else is sowing theirs.

I will be doing Shirley, Sungold, Moneymaker, Gardeners Delight and Cherry Falls. Have a greenhouse but will start in my kitchen, not sure when yet.

    Kind Regards........Rob

It really depends if you have somewhere to put them before the last frost, so you have to kind of work back from there, last year I started a month earlier as I had the grow station set up in the shed, so I have planned for the last week of February and my last frost date is last week of April

I think this year I am going to sow in two batches to lengthen the harvest. So I will sow some at the beginning of February and some in mid March. But I have a greenhouse with the option of heat if there is a late cold snap. If you don't, I'd suggest you plan accordingly, as advised by Cadastral.

I start most of mine at the beginning of March otherwise they get too tall by the time you plant them out. Im sowing some balconi red seeds soon under lights, they're such small plants they can stay under the light until we get some warmth here, around May.

I don't start sowing till March. It's as much to do with light levels as it is temperature for me (and space).

I sow mine in early March then hopefully they're not to big to carry between the kitchen and GH until its planting out time.

I'm sowing a few this week. They are small, trailing ones intended for pots on a shelf in the GH. From memory, it'll be Rambling Red Stripe, Tumbling Tom and I don't know what else until I open the seed box. I'll keep the seedlings on the window sill until the weather warms up for the GH.
I'll sow some bush and parthenocarpic ones in 4 weeks time and the cordon toms 4 weeks later in March.

(Bit worried about this - sounds like I'm organised and have a plan!!)

                mid-end Feb to March. Depends.

probably in a heated propagator first, and then out into the greenhouse.

I'll be starting mine mid-March and then potting them on late April depending on weather conditions.

Paulie, have you tried sowing in two batches to lengthen the harvest period before? In my experience, the plants catch up with each other. If you want a longer harvest, maybe you could try some later tom varieties. In my case, I'm going for cherry toms for the earliest harvest and Cuor di Bue to be assured of toms at the end, but there are other varieties I'm sure.

I intend to plant more varieties but less plants, won't be till around March though, winter can hang on up here.

I'm glad of this thread because it's so many years since I grew tomatoes from seed that I can't remember when I used to sow, but I'm doing some this year. I will probably go for late Feb to early March once all the chillies are out of the propagator.

Like VC I always sow a couple of toms early that stay permanently in pots - usually Garden Pearl and Yellow Peardrops. They are small enough for me to carry them back indoors if it gets too cold in the greenhouse in April.

The others won't get sown until mid-March. If I can decide which ones I'm actually growing before then

                          Parthenocarpic tomatoes?

                          VC: parthenocarpic ones
I know these have been discussed over the years, but do you think they really do set fruit earlier? Which vareties have you tried?

I grow Legend and Oregon Spring. They make chunky bushes, biggish tomatoes and I like the flavour.
