  • When to plant from seed for veg to be ready for Christmas

Hi, when is the time to plant veg such as turnips or carrots that can stand up to a bit of winter and be ready for around Christmas? I want to try and keep myself active at the plot over winter on something more than just onions and garlic

I sowed my swedes 2 weeks ago.

You can probably sow carrots now if you choose a cold hardy variety like nantes frubund or eskimo that is bred to stand through the winter.

Just last week sowed my dwarf curly kale and spring cabbages, the kale is already showing. Fortunately I have a lot of different sizes pots so can keep everything going by potting on until such times that my potato dustbins are clear (curly kale) and my calabrese and peas are harvested (spring cabbage).
