  • When is the earliest you can plant out potatoes?

I have lots of sprouted potatoes and can't peeled the chits from the potatoes so I could eat them but now I've got nowhere to store these chits with bits of peel on so wondering if they'll survive if I were to plant them out now or start of January? Thanks!

Start them in 3" pots on the windowsill. Much too cold to plant out yet, and they need to form some roots.

Are you talking about planting the peelings, that have chits on?

They aren't ideal, they'll be soft white shoots, and you want strong dark green ones. Try again later, and plant out March-ish (depends where you are, of course)

yes, the shoots look very strong and since they are growing I thought it would be such a waste to throw them away especially since it's a variety hard to grab hold of normally (purple majesty)

I've pulled the long sprouts off mine, as they all have long roots forming already - and am putting them in Roottrainers, and they will go into a warm greenhouse, then out onto a school plot around March time. Maybe a month earlier if I can find a good fleece and net to put over them.

You'd need to punch a hole through the permafrost round here............
