What's pulled my onions up ?

    What's pulled my onions up ?

    Morning everyone.

    I nipped to my allotment yesterday to find the netting I had put over my onions and garlic had been completely demolished (please see pic below) the two canes you an see on the path at the side were laying on the soil being used as decided a and as you can see the onion sets are in small piles I accept that the wind could have demolished the netting but what would have pulled the onions and garlic up ?

    Oh and has anyone got any tips for weighting down the edges of the netting ? It keeps blowing up a bit I have just leaned some bricks against it for now but I have 6 beds to do like this and don't have enough bricks for all of them lol.

    There's another thread about this Newishgardener, started yesterday - why do onions pop out of the ground?

    Re-your netting, I use rocks or long pieces of wood to weight mine down. You're right, the wind does catch it quite easily.

        If there is no evidence of digging near the sets,then the answers in the other thread apply here,mine sometimes get dug by a tree rat looking for stored nuts

          If the onion sets are in small piles, i would suspect that something or someone pulled them up
          I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

            What are they planted in? I find blackbirds will do a fair bit of digging looking for grubs, particularly from compost straight from the heap.

              Thank for the responses everyone they are in new compost that was bought there were no signs of digging around them just a few small piles of onions to the sides of the bed.

                NewishGardener - i hold any netting down with metal tent pegs which are strong enough and deep enough even to hold wire chicken netting securely. They are always for sale in the pound shop and of course can be used over and over again.

                  Small children?
                  Squirrels?
                  Blackbirds will pull them out because they think the little tiny tip of brown is a worm. They don't move them very far normally.

                    This could be about right actually would they tend to leave them in small piles when they realize that they aren't ?? None of the ones that have started sprouting had been pulled up so that would make sense :-)
