i grow my potatoes in sacks. recently two out of the three potatoes have developed these brown spots on them. and one of the potato plants has started to wilt. does anyone know what this is? will it spread? should i destroy the plants?

Oh Crazii C, I hate to be the one to tell you, but that does look like the beginning of Blight!
If there aren't too many leaves affected, pick them off and burn them, then try spraying with Bordeaux mixture. Mind you, if the plants are wilting it might be too late. You can try cutting all the foliage off (again, DON'T compost it - burn it) and leaving any tubers in the ground to try and get them to swell a bit more, but if the bilght gets down into them, they won't store very well and may even start to rot in the ground. Might be best to lift what you have.
Someone might come along and contradict me (hopefully), but it doesn't look good to me. Sorry....

Well, I shall watch this thread with great interest, as mine have the same!! I spoke to a potato farmer friend today and he thought it was probably caused by a magnesium deficiency due to the weather being so dry. I have to say that I tend to think that this could be the cause, and not because that's what I would rather it was. We shall see what others say....Life is brief and very fragile, do that which makes you happy.Comment

ive been googling pictures all day an ive also seen similar pics and it says magnesium deficiency. blight photos seem to be bigger blotches. i'll wait for further suggestions

Get a good does of Epsom Salts on them; cut off the affected leaves so that they don't try to put good energy after bad and keep them well watered. Have you put potato fertiliser in the compost?
I'd also give them a good feed of seaweed from liquid; it's a good all rounder when things look a little sad.Last edited by zazen999; 11-06-2011, 08:32 AM.

I've got the same recently and gave them a good feed but it seems to have got worse. My leaves don't have the yellowness that is suggested for mg deficiency so I now believe its probably 'target spot' - aka early blight. Apparently not as bad as late blight and most sources seem to suggest no treatment necessary??Comment

How long have they been in? If they're earlier they could be ready -- the plants will look pretty ragged as they come to the end!Garden Grower

i planted them mid march, they are rocket and vivaldi. i will nip to the garden centre tomorrow and look out for epson salts. my salad blue spuds which i planted mid april in a sack next to them look perfectly healthy.http://pot-to-plot.blogspot.com/ My brand spanking new plot Comment
